Glove boxes for the aerospace industry: titanium welding, additive manufacturing and analysis of extraterrestrial samples
Supporting your projects from laboratory research right through to industrial production lines.
Jacomex designs bespoke glove boxes for the aerospace industry: welding and handling of titanium powders, additive manufacturing, and the analysis of extraterrestrial samples under a controlled atmosphere.
Jacomex’s containment chambers and purification systems provide a purified atmosphere, free from oxygen (O₂), moisture (H₂O) and volatile organic compounds, meeting the requirements of key aerospace applications: titanium welding and additive manufacturing, maintenance, and the analysis of extraterrestrial samples.
Our technology removes traces (<1 ppm) of O₂ and H₂O, operating either under negative pressure (operator protection) or positive pressure with inert gas (process protection), depending on the application. Our partnerships within industry and with research laboratories provide integrated solutions, ensuring ergonomics, productivity and safety at every stage.
Main applications
- Welding of titanium components for the aerospace industry
- Handling and processing of titanium powders (additive manufacturing)
- Recycling of asbestos-containing waste (aerospace maintenance)
- Handling of extraterrestrial samples
An environmentally friendly design – Energy savings for everyone!
Protecting our environment should not mean having to make compromises. That is why the energy-saving mode is included and available free of charge on all Jacomex glove boxes.
- Standard power consumption = 198 watts
- Energy-saving mode = up to 31 watts
Standard configuration
Titanium welding & additive manufacturing
- Titanium and its alloys are extremely reactive to oxygen and moisture when hot
- Welding carried out in the open air embrittles the metal (oxidation, porosity) and compromises the mechanical strength of critical components such as wings or structural parts
- The glove box creates a controlled inert atmosphere that protects the molten pool during welding, ensuring the quality and safety of the joint
- The same contamination issue applies to additive manufacturing: the titanium powders used in metal 3D printing must be handled and stored without any contact with the air
- Jacomex’s bespoke glove box models are tailored to your requirements: the size of the component determines the size of the airlock and the glove box.
Analysis of extraterrestrial samples under a controlled atmosphere
- Opening and handling of samples under a controlled atmosphere
- Purified glove box, free from traces of oxygen (O₂), moisture (H₂O) and volatile organic compounds
- Interfacing with specialised analytical processes (microscopy, freeze-drying, etc.)
- Designed to preserve the integrity of samples that have never been exposed to terrestrial atmospheric pollution
Aerospace maintenance
- Maintenance work on aircraft can sometimes expose technicians to hazardous materials, particularly asbestos-containing materials found in older parts or equipment
- Appropriate containment within a glove box enables these asbestos-containing wastes to be handled, recycled and processed without exposing operators or contaminating the working environment
- The glove box ensures the safety of these procedures by physically isolating the operator from the material whilst allowing them full dexterity to carry out the technical task
- A configuration suited to a variety of tasks, from one-off asbestos removal to more extensive maintenance operations involving sensitive materials or substances
